Mauritius
You could say I’d already ticked Mauritius off my bucket list as I’ve flown there at least four times and even spent an hour in the water but each of those occasions has just been a transit stop on the way to Rodrigues, so this really was a trip I’d been waiting for.
“It’s out of season and its winter, why are you going now” Harty protested when I’d mentioned the trip a few weeks earlier. The answer was easy, RRD had paid for the flight and I wasn’t about to complain.
If this is out of season I can’t imagine what it’s like in season, I sailed everyday, though if you’re being fussy, then two days were really light. There was a wave everyday, and on most occasions that meant underwear-changing conditions at One Eye. Yet there was still an abundance of flat water for blasting or dangling under a kite.
All in all, perfect conditions for all the RRD importers to test the latest toys. That sounds like an excuse for another jolly holiday and to an extent it is but in my defense I not only went to every meeting but was also the photographer for the shoot we were running alongside the meeting.
So that’s another tick for the bucket list, shooting from a helicopter. Actually we had two over the week, not that I can show off much of what was shot and that goes for most of my pix from the week as it’s was all about the future.
The shots I’d really like to show you aren’t even in camera, though the visions are still swirling around my head, yes, I got to sail One Eye, and yes, I did scare myself silly.
To be honest it probably better these images weren’t caught on camera, they’d only ruin my experience with the truth. Think I only caught six good waves and three of those ended up with me going over the reef. Yet every one of them will remain in my memory as the biggest and best wave I’ve ever ridden, so why on earth I’d want a picture to ruin that.
