GPS Gybing
GPS Gybing

Light wind practice again this week, but with the experience from Club Dahab’s windsurfing instructors we had plenty of reasons to get out and practice. Marco and Chris hit a good balance between instruction and practice, in the fickle winds we were dealt it’s all too easy to keep the theory sessions and hit information overload. While we want to improve our windsurfing, we shouldn’t forget it’s a holiday.
With so many windsurfing instructors at Club Dahab it was possible to split the groups into five levels enabling small numbers and ensuring everyone gets plenty of personal time. With Chris and Marco’s groups being so close in experience we all joined in together which enabled one to keep on the water while the other videoed the clinic from the beach or platform depending where we sailed.
I had a bunch of Garmin GPS’s with me and we downloaded them it was easy to see how the GPS wasn’t just for speed diamonds. Looking at the tracks it was easy to see where gybes were going right or wrong. Windsurf simulators are great place to break down the gybe, on the water its got to be a flowing move, video sessions certainly help to see where theory and reality part company. But adding a GPS to monitor the hole sailing session enables us to see how the setup to the gybe was, and for most people the gybe goes wrong a long time before it’s initiated.
By the time we got to the end barbeque, several were looking to go home and get their own GPS. We also had a bit of a prize giving where the top three won prizes from Gaastra, Garmin, and Aqua Pack. And to ensure the rest of the winter isn’t too cold, they also get a jacket from Result.
