Coaching the Coach
My week has been full of stars, Sylvester Stallone, Bill Wyman, and Paul Perry have all be a part of my week. Admittedly Sylvester was a wax model, but Bill Wyman was the real deal. But of the three names its probably the last that you’ll probably not recognize, but just add “Martial Arts” along side his name in a Google search and you’ll be wondering who is coaching who.
Being the half term holidays I took a trip into London with the family, first stop was Madame Tussauds. It’s great to see an attraction done well enough to rival the standard set in America, shame it has to come at double the price. The kids had a great time and being around all the stars was great preparation for the rest of my week.
Is there anyone on the planet that hasn’t heard of Bill Wyman and the Rolling Stones? Several decades may have passed since Bill started paying base in the Rolling Stones, but a few hours in his company soon shoots past.
For a change it wasn’t windsurfing that brought our paths to cross, but photography. Bill is into metal detecting and couldn’t find a suitable one for his daughter, after a few calls C.Scope have development one for the job, and this is how we came to meet. While I was taking the pix, Adrian Fearson was behind his camera shooting for a DVD, while the metal detacting isn’t on my list of must do’s, Bill had so much enthuasum and stories that its almost impossible not to get drawn in.
As the week came to a close I headed out to Egypt with Quayside Windsurfers. A regular on the trip was, 8th dan jin sei kai Paul Perry, with his martial arts history you don’t turn him down when he wants a bit of windsurfing coaching. Would like to think it was my coaching that helped him reach his goals, but start talking to him any you soon find out he knows more about coaching than I’ll ever know.
Just type “Paul Perry Martial Arts” into Google and you’re computer will start to over load with all the possible sites that site him as the main man, guess if Maclaren took him onboard to help David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen, then that’s enough for me.
I’ve always thought you can over complicate windsurfing instruction, for those past the basics it more the lack of confidence that hold back the progress. I’m not a technical sailor and can’t ever see me breaking down someone’s gybe into a hundred pieces just to rebuild it again. The information is already there, I like to help unlock that knowledge by boosting the confidence.
Paul wasn’t alone in getting better with confidence, but the knowledge I gained from him on the beach gave me the confidence to trust in this direction.
