Going to Namibia
No one wants to be first at the party, and certainly not ten hours early. Everyone going to Walvis Bay’s speed strip in Namibia was flying out of Munich airport at 9pm, unfortunately our connecting flight out of England left at 8am. The only advantage was getting booked in before everyone else arrived with a mountain of equipment. If you’ve ever worried there wasn’t enough room for you kit, don’t, we had two containers full of it.
It took thirty-seven hours from door to door, but the hardest part of the journey was walking out my front door. I’m lucky to have had more than my share of travelling, but its normally no more than a couple of weeks, this time it’s a month and for me its just a bit too long, I dread to think what the phone bill will be like.
Bjorn’s search for speed brought Walvis Bay to the worlds attention a couple of years ago, but this event has had a long local history of speed. Back in 2000 I got an invite from Mark Grinnell (Janet), unfortunately I was in the middle of my cancer treatment and wasn’t able to go. Now I’m finally here I can see the speed course looks fantastic, but having met the guys, I recon the biggest thing I missed out on was there friendship.
The course is a sand bank opposite the Yacht Club, it is possible to sail from the club, but changing kit takes too long, so a storage area was erected on the bank. Last year everything got flooded out with the spring tides, the full moon was last week so we should have it easy this week.
We’ve only been here for a couple of days, and while there’s been no wind as yet, the wildlife is in force. Every boat trip is escorted from the air and sea, on the last trip over we even picked up a hitchhiker, super friendly guy. I am going to miss the family but feel sure I’ll have some great experiences to take back to them
