FatFace
Nine months ago Alan Cross told me he was thinking of running a windsurfing event for everyone, no complicated rules and use whatever kit you have, sounded good and figured if the was a hundred or so boards on the water it would be a success. Guess I like many other underestimated Alan’s motivation, and when you consider illness took him out of action for a few months the amount of sailors enjoying the weekend was staggering.
I’m not sure what the final figure was, but it was over three hundred for sure. Face Face got right behind the event by making it part of their night series, Alan even got the windsurf industry singing from the same song sheet, and just in case there wasn’t any wind, clinics would be held every few hours.
The weather did us proud, the wind blew and all but a drizzle, the rain stayed away. Night windsurfing was a hit with the crowds, yes, there was the biggest crowed I’ve seen at a beach since the high days of Brighton. No one knew what to expect, but once out of the floodlights range all we could see was the faint glow of the light sticks spinning through the air. As the sails came back into view it was Nik Baker’s K-66 that showed the fleet the way back to the light to take the win. It was the perfect excuse for a party, and Fat Face had a great one waiting including a live band.
The night surfing was great, but the main event was without doubt the master blasters, everyone blasting way out to see, gybe and scream back to dash up the beach to the finish. Three races on Saturday, two on Sunday and not a miserable face to be seen, it was a sea of smiles as all ages and abilities raced side by side, everyone took it at there own pace but that’s not to say the competition wasn't hard fort. You’ll see everyone gave it there all just from the pix of the beach dash, and one believe it or not there was no one even close the the guy who was just a little too keen and fell on at the landing.
No doubt the event will be getting plenty of pages in the mags, so it seems a little unfair to give all results away, but as there wouldn’t be enough pages to cover all the pix I’ll put a few below but pop back and I’ll load hundreds more in the next few days. but until then I’d like to pass everyone’s thanks on to Alan for putting it all together and big thanks to Will form Fat Face, good to see he almost missed the prize giving because he were out windsurfing. But my weekend wouldn’t have been complete without a little friend who helped me out with the pictures and my clinic, my new found mate nine year old Tom, have a good one Tom, enjoy the windsurfing an try not trash your sail like your brother.
